Pear and Ginger Jam

PRESENTATION

The pear and ginger jam is a really fantastic blend—straight from Italy—giving a classic treat a fresh, modern twist. It starts with the juicy, sweet goodness of 'Abate' pears, famous for their soft texture, mixed with the spicy kick of fresh ginger root. And here's the thing: this combo makes a jam that's not only sweet, but also has a great tangy touch, thanks to a hint of candied ginger. In places like Emilia-Romagna, jams like this go beyond just breakfast spreads. Seriously good. They're perfect for snacks or as part of an aperitivo. Imagine this: spreading homemade pear ginger jam on toasted bread or pairing it with some tender aged cheese. The sweet pears and sharp ginger create a harmony that totally elevates the flavors of cheese beautifully.

In Italy, trying out different jam flavors is really a thing. You might find combos like pear and cinnamon, peach and lavender, or even something exotic like pineapple. But the pear ginger jam recipe—no question—remains a staple, offering just enough zing to make it unique. It's not just for bread; it works with everything from crispy crackers to moist cakes. This jam transforms a simple snack to a highlight on a fancy cheese board when entertaining friends. Making spiced pear jam at home brings the joy of fresh, authentic flavors, letting you boast about using real fruit and ginger. Whether you're into canning recipes or prefer straightforward fresh fruit preserves, this jam brings a slice of Italian snack culture into your kitchen. It's a fun way to shake up your routine and savor something traditional and unexpected. Plus, trying out this delicious spread is a pretty simple way to impress your guests and introduce them to a taste of Italy's rich culinary heritage. Really, cannot go wrong.

How to prepare Pear and Ginger Jam

To prepare the pear and ginger jam, start by sanitizing the jars as indicated in the box at the end of the recipe. At this point, take the Abate pears and remove their outer skin 1, then cut them in half 2, then into quarters to more easily remove the seeds 3.

Cut the pears into pieces 4; then peel the fresh ginger root 5 and also cut it into pieces 6. Finally, squeeze the lemon juice.

In a large saucepan, place the pears 7, the ginger 8, the sugar 9,

the lemon juice 10 and cook over medium heat. Occasionally move the saucepan to make sure the bottom doesn't stick. Once the sugar has dissolved, raise the heat and, using a thermometer, make sure it reaches 226°F 11 before removing the jam from the heat; once it reaches 226°F, the jam will be ready. Transfer the mixture to a food mill 12

and pass everything through it 13. Use the sanitized jars and fill them with the warm pear and ginger jam 14, then seal them tightly 15. Let the jars cool completely upside down on a clean cloth, until completely cool. Check for a vacuum seal by pressing the center of the screw cap to ensure there is no "click-clack" indicating the seal is not vacuumed.

Storage

You can store the pear and ginger jam in a pantry away from light and heat sources for 2-3 months. If you open the jar, keep it in the fridge and consume your jam within 3-4 days at most.

IMPORTANT

Homemade preparation of preserves and jams can pose health risks. In a domestic environment, it is not possible to create the necessary conditions and measures to ensure the safety and suitability of food, which, on the contrary, industrial procedures can guarantee to prevent dangerous contamination. It is therefore important to strictly follow food safety instructions to reduce risks, but one must always keep in mind that the same food safety as professionally produced preserves and jams can never be achieved. For proper preparation of homemade preserves, we refer to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health.
